Susan!

So, as part of the mini 4 Week Challenge for Zero2illo (which will probably end up taking me 4 months) here is Susan, completed in gouache and indian ink. We've been asked to blog our progress, so here she is from conception to completion!

Preliminary sketch:

Note the Scary Monsters album cover, oh how I LOVE this cover art. A big inspiration, let alone Bowie himself.

Photoshop sketch to establish colourway:

This is probably the first time I've been this organised with preliminary stuff. But it really helped and saved time and frustration in the long run. If only my art teacher could see me now...along with my penchant for outlining everything which he hated, I was always marked down for my lack of prep. Finally sir, I've learnt the error of my ways.

Taking brush to paper:

Adding colour and detail:

And finally, the outline:

I've had to take this picture at a slight angle so as to avoid glare from the ink outline. Hopefully I'll get a lovely clean scan soon...once I find an A3 scanner.

Working on a new pic....

....here's a little taster, a Photoshop sketch to decide the colour palette. I like her so far! Have been watching a lot of 80's films for inspiration, it would seem I can watch Pretty In Pink, The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller an infinite number of times without getting bored of them.

FUSE screening at The ICA

Photo taken during shooting in the green screen studio, check out the Fuse Youtube channel for a short video explaining how the film was made.

Last night Fuse, the short film I blogged about earlier this year, was screened at The ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) in London. Written, directed and edited by my extremely talented cousin Ben Barfoot, it was a wonderful night with everyone who worked on the film, plus a legion of loyal friends, coming together to watch it on the big screen.....at last!

Click here to check out the Fuse channel on Youtube, where you can see the trailer. Exciting times!

Digital doodles....

This image, called 'Smile, Baby', started life as a collage but I thought I'd tinker with it to see how it looked with really flat areas of colour.

Here's the original - the scan shows up the black outline as fainter than it actually is. I really like the fact it's slightly off-register as I was going for a screen-print effect.

And here's the digital version. I love the vibrancy if the colours and the crispness of this one, but perhaps it's lost a little 'soul' along the way...?

What do you think?

Playing with Photoshop!

So I've finally made my foray into the world of digital images! I've played around with Photoshop before but this is the first time I'm dedicating time to learning it properly.

Here's an idea I came up with after reading a book on Art Nouveau, I was inspired by the use of bones and organic forms.

The initial sketch:

And here it is after a little tinkering on Photoshop:

It's still pretty sketchy, but even after just working on one image I'm much more confident with the software. And I really love the creepiness of this image! What is it...???!

Hipstamatic!

Ok, so I've slagged it off before but Hipstamatic on the iPhone IS actually quite cool. It makes pretty much anything look hip, baby, which I suppose is the point...!

The Masked Lady...

I don't know where she came from, but she popped into my head as I was sitting by the canal with my dear friend Anthony. Perhaps my favourite scene from Labyrinth bubbled up from my subconcious...you know, this one...

Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the goblin city. For my will is as strong as yours and my kingdom is as great! You have no power over me.......ahh how I love this film. Jim Henson's workshop and Bowie in tights, what's not to like!

The Roundabout

I was recently asked to create storyboards for my friend Alex Martin's new film, The Roundabout. Here's some info from the website:

'The Roundabout, which commences filming this Autumn is a comedy horror in which John Robertson, an uninspiring music teacher overcomes his inner demons while trying to reverse a deal he accidentally makes with the Devil. It’s Shaun of the Dead meets The Omen meets Back to the Future!'.

I've read the script and I can tell you it's funny. Laugh out loud funny. Really looking forward to seeing it come to life.

Click here to check out the dedicated website for the film. My work is displayed on 'The Film' page.
Click here to follow the film on Facebook.

In order to secure funding Alex and the production team need to promote the film and prove there is an audience that want to see it made, so make sure you click 'like' when you check them out on Facebook! Every click counts, y'all.

Vintage Garment Labels

Last year, whilst working in a vintage shop in Brick Lane, I became a bit obsessed with the myriad designs and typefaces of garment labels. Here's a selection of my favourites....

12 Week Zero 2 Illo Challenge, second piece!

So here is the second piece for the 12 Week Challenge, much happier with this one.

Here's the first sketch, the idea came to me just as I was falling asleep so I quickly scribbled it down:

This is the basic layout and shading sketch...prep is a complete novelty for me but I'm learning to be patient!

And here is the final piece, coloured using gouache and lined using Indian Ink. MUCH happier with this weeks piece.

So now I'm going to go back and work on the first weeks picture and do some inprovements. Will post once done.

For this weeks picture I found great inspiration in the work of Walter Minus, from a book I stumbled across in the library. Beautiful crisp lines and lovely colours...not to mention beautiful pin-up style women. Really love his style.

Desire/ Demand

Stamping your foot
You won't get what you want
By giving me that look

Black Out

Cover and smother
Block out the light
What is wrong
Who is right?
Crush out breath and
Bring forth the blind then
Thick wet blood
Mixes with mine

Search and rescue
Seek and destroy
Push into me
Distraction, decoy.

Block out the day
Keep out the light
Black out truth
Keep guard
Hold tight.
